Do you dread school holidays and need activities to do together?
A great idea is to bake cookies!!
Now before you stop reading and your mind jumps to the MESS, just wait and read on.
Baking can tap into a child's motivation and promote the development of learning, play, life skills, motor skills and social skills. It also helps with Language and Maths.
The process of preparing ingredients, measuring everything out, and following a recipe means that when we see and taste the finished product, it's even better! It can lead to improved self-confidence due to the sense of achievement, similar to that of achieving a goal!

GETTING STARTED
The first step is to find a simple cookie recipe
( links below) and ensure you have all the ingredients needed.
Always explain safety aspects to your child : nog to open / touch the hot oven , not to run in the kitchen etc.
pour a sink of warm soapy water. As you follow the recipe, you can pop dirty dishes into the sink .
READ THE RECIPE TOGETHER AND PLAN
Read the recipe. As you go along take out equipment and ingredients . This teaches children to think ahead and execute their plan.
START THE PROCESS
Read the recipe. As you read, carefully weigh out the ingredients and add to the bowl . Let your child do this. Even if there is a bit of mess
( which can be cleaned up at the end), your child will feel that you trust them with this important task and they will feel a sense of accomplishment . Pop dirty dishes into the sink of soapy water as you go along . This makes the clean up at the end a LOT faster.

MAKING THE COOKIES
Let your child make balls out of the dough and flatten them. This helps with dexterity, motor coordination and a sense of pride. Even if you end up with different shapes and size cookies, your child will be super proud of their efforts .
BAKING AND CLEAN UP
Once the cookies are on the baking sheet and have been popped into the oven , you can turn your attention to the cleaning up.
Because you popped your dishes into the sink as you went along, it’s easy to quickly wash what’s in the sink , while the cookies bake. Your child leans that we need to tidy up after an activity.
By the time the washing is done, and counters wiped down , the cookies should be ready to come out the oven .

While they cool down, you can chat to your child about what they liked and didn’t like about baking together . It’s a great opportunity to praise your child for all the things they did well.
LAST BUT NOt LEAST…
You get to enjoy the delicious cookies together!! Yum!
Happy baking !!
Love you,
Bye
